Mental Filmness just set up our new call for entries! We will begin accepting submissions again starting January 1, 2020 through August 15, 2020. You can submit to our Filmfreeway page at

Mental Filmness will charge a small entry fee of $10 for Mental Filmness 2020. We learned from our inaugural festival that we received many irrelevant entries when we did not charge an entry fee. In addition, we realized charging entry fees could help offset our costs of printing programs and fly in visiting filmmakers. Any leftover money will be donated to NAMI.

That being said, our ultimate goal is to keep the festival as accessible as possible for a community that may already be disenfranchised and struggling, and to accept all voices within that community. Any requests for waivers of the fee should be addressed to and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Please ensure before submitting that your film does adhere to our guideline of portraying mental illness in a realistic and empathetic way.

Comfort Station accepts all formats other than DCP and 35 mm.

By participating in Mental Filmness, you will be an exciting part of the second year of Chicago’s first film festival based around mental health.

Our festival does plan to give out awards at our second-year festival based on some of our objectives. There will be a Stigma Breaker award for the film we feel most effectively battles the stigma of mental illness. There will be a Realism Award for the film we feel most realistically depicts its condition. There will be an Empathy Award for the film that we best feel promotes empathy for mental illness. There will be no cash value for these awards.

Mental Filmness proudly accepts entries on FilmFreeway, the world’s #1 way to enter film festivals and creative contests.
