Festival Highlight – Giving Seance

The intriguingly titled short film Giving Seance has a short, sweet, and simple concept for exploring the shocking suicide of a loved one. The seance this group of teenage girls gives is an attempt to communicate with their classmate who died by suicide; in reality, it’s a way for them all to process their grief and the complicated thoughts surrounding her death.

The youthful sincerity of the performances and realistic script by the young filmmaker Madeline Burgin infuse Giving Seance with a fresh energy. The film delivers a powerful message about the questions plaguing the loss of suicide survivors while friends bond over this loss in a safe, supportive environment. In this clever way, the film is able to explore questions of blame, memory, and acceptance regarding suicide loss while still feeling warm and relatable.

Giving Seance plays Friday evening, 10/9, at Mental Filmness.
